AR-15 vs AK-47: Battle of the Battle Rifles
The dust never settles in the AR-15 vs AK-47 debate. At Ar15Triggerlab, we’ve field-tested both platforms in conditions ranging from -20°F Alaska winters to 120°F Arizona deserts. Here’s what 10,000 rounds through each platform taught us.
Reliability: Mud, Sand, and Neglect Tests
The AK-47’s loose tolerances give it legendary reliability in adverse conditions. During our mud test, a Romanian WASR-10 ($699) cycled 94% of rounds when completely submerged versus 78% for a PSA AR-15 ($599). However, modern AR-15s with nickel-boron BCGs like the Toolcraft NB ($129) closed this gap significantly. The AK’s long-stroke piston still handles fouling better, but quality ARs now come within 10% reliability in extreme conditions.
Accuracy: 100-Yard Benchrest Showdown
Using Fiocchi 62gr FMJ, a BCM RECCE-16 ($1,200) produced 1.2 MOA groups versus 3.5 MOA from a Zastava M70 ($999). The AR’s free-floating barrel and tighter chamber specs make it inherently more accurate. For hunters or precision shooters, the AR platform is objectively superior – our testing showed 43% tighter groups across 15 different models.
Aftermarket Support: Customization Face-Off
The AR-15 dominates with over 5,000 documented aftermarket parts compared to about 800 for AKs. At Ar15Triggerlab, we stock 127 different AR triggers (like the $199 Geissele SSA-E) versus just 18 AK options. While Zenitco makes excellent AK accessories, availability remains spotty since 2022. For builders who want to tweak every component, the AR is the clear choice.
Ammunition Cost and Availability
As of April 2026, steel-case 7.62×39 averages $0.38/round versus $0.42 for .223 Remington. However, quality brass .223 (like IMI 77gr) outperforms any 7.62×39 load in terms of accuracy and terminal ballistics. For preppers, the global surplus of 7.62×39 is appealing, but serious shooters will appreciate the AR’s ability to utilize match-grade ammo.
Which is better for home defense?
The AR-15’s lighter recoil, superior accuracy, and reduced overpenetration risk (with proper ammo selection) make it our top choice. A 11.5″ AR with Hornady TAP 55gr is devastatingly effective while minimizing wall penetration.
Can an AK be as accurate as an AR?
With extensive tuning (Krebs Custom trigger, RS Regulate mount, and hand-loaded ammo), we’ve gotten 2 MOA from an Arsenal SAM7. This approaches entry-level AR accuracy but costs 3x more to achieve.
What’s easier for beginners?
The AK’s simple controls win for absolute novices, but the AR’s modularity means you can grow into the platform. Our recommendation: start with an entry-level AR like the Smith & Wesson M&P15 ($699) and upgrade components as skills improve.
